Real Estate Investing in Spartanburg

I’ve been involved with real estate literally since I was a baby! My grandfather was a Master Carpenter who lived his entire life on the same street on Cape Cod. I remember riding around town as a 6 year old and him pointing out the house he put the dormer on, or the house he had to repair doors and broken windows and shutters from a storm.  He was a true craftsman who took great pride in his work. He was a cantankerous and passionate man.

“Time marches on” was one of his favorite sayings. The older I get the faster time goes! As the economy here in the US fluctuates I am well aware of the wisdom passed on through my family. Long term planning is crucial. “Saving for a rainy day” was in our DNA I do believe. Time will not stand still. Our economy WILL pull itself up and TODAY just might be the best time to purchase real estate in key markets.
Back to my youth. Even as a kid I read the local real estate guides and saw houses selling for $50,000 down the street. “Outrageous, I could have bought that house for $10,000 a few years ago!” 40 years later it’s worth at least $500,000 now. Would that have been a good investment??

I tell you this because from those early days of my life the seeds were planted deep within me and I was hooked. I purchased my first rental home with another Air Traffic Controller in the Air Force when we were stationed in Indiana. I was 19 and very timid. I remember the mortgage was $111 a month. Not a misprint…$111 a month and we rented it for $250. I Think we paid $11,000 for the house. With ALL my experience it made sense. That was 1981.

In 1982 I was assigned to a base in SC. A year or so later I visited the quiet little city of Spartanburg, SC  in the beautiful Foothills of the state. I immediately saw the low prices of houses and knew it was a growing area…Maybe it was time to invest again?

Fast forward to 2008…our city is transforming itself. Spartanburg County has been #1 in the nation per capita for foreign investment. When BMW decided to build there US plant here our county gained more attention around the world this time. I see our relatively low prices still and know first hand the commitment from our business leaders to make this one of the best places to work and live in the Southeast. We were #3 in the entire South Atlantic region last year for home appreciation.

We’ve been slow and steady when it comes to moving forward. Now it is no longer a secret. If you’ve read this far I would like to extend this offer. Put my 20+ years of living in this community to work. Become a member of our REIA and let’s sit down and discuss “where” the true opportunities are here. I know for a fact there are out of town investor’s buying properties because our prices are low…many are being sold by unscrupulous people who inflate values for instance. As President of the REIA I’ve met many investors. I work with those who’ve proven over time to be honest, ethical, and trustworthy!

I look forward to helping you.

After meeting with some rental prospects I decided that I would rent homes and not houses, I only have two right now. It may sound silly or unprofessional, but what can I say, I’m an amateur. :) It lets me do silly things, but not stupid, I’ve already done that. I would like to buy you lunch someday soon and talk about real estate.

Warmest Regard,
Gary
